Task 1:
Listen to this audio and fill in the blanks. Then, use all the words and phrasal verbs in a sentence of your own.
New Year's Day is the day when people ...celebrate.................. the beginning of a new year. On New Year's Eve, family and friends often get together for dinner or have a party to welcome in the New Year. People often.. ..came down......... the hours, minutes, and seconds before the new year arrives, and they sometimes ..set off fire works...... or play loud music. New Year's Day is a time of new beginnings, so people often make New Year's ..resolutions...............---promises or goals they hope to ...accomplish........during the coming year. Such resolutions often include losing weight, getting in shape, or eating a healthy diet. Other resolutions might deal with improving one's relationship with a family member or friend. Sometimes, these resolutions are short lived, that is, people don't ..follow through... on their plans. However, the New Year gives people opportunities to change and improve their lives.
Making New Year's resolutions is a common practice for many people around the world.
Write a paragraph about your promises to yourself for the New Year. The best resolutions are those that you can be pretty sure of keeping. Choose three resolutions– one about personal improvement, one about family and friends, and one about work/career. Then list the factors that contribute to your ability to achieve your new plans.
New year has come. Today is the first school day. I met my friends here again and shared vacation stories each other.
2014 has gone, I have been here for 6 months. How about my new year? I have to say it will still be quiet hard for me, even for every new comer who lives Canada for less than one year.
However, it is new beginning, and a great opportunity to rebuild my new life.
We should make New Year's resolutions so as not to waste time.
I have three resolutions.
First, about my personal goals. It is simple goal, but need to take much time and patience to follow through. It is to learn English.
I will continue to study English in LINC school. Now I am in 5~6 level class, I want to accomplish my English study until to 6~7 level.
After school, keep practice and more practice, the most difficult by myself is practicing speaking. I think attending some conversation circles will be helpful. For listening, I plan to practice my ears by listening news and seeing American dramas. For reading, take any time and opportunity to read. We can do them by ourselves. For writing, I need to overcome my laziness to write and modify something as more as possible.
Second, about family and friends. My husband will come Canada this year. I hope we meet together here, then we want to travel some places.
Third, about my career. I want to apply to college program again, I prefer to take one year program. I need to improve my English at first, and do some preparation for entrance exam.
Excellent! Thanks Niki
